1984 alternator
hi there i was just wondering if I can replace my 1984 accord alternator for one from a 1985?the guy at lordco says that i need to replace with same year and same engine size but the guy at pick a part says that i can replace with either 84 or 85 and that it doesn't matter the engine size.please let me know as I am unable to replace with a new one from the store but I have a couple different options if I am able to use a 85 alternator instead

84-85 I doubt there is any difference. Unless the specs are way off I'd say go for it. I don't feel that an 85 would have less amps than an 84. The only thing I'd be worried about is not the output but the mounting. Can you compare the connections between the two to see if there are any differences in mounting points. If that lines up then your golden and the 85 should be a go.

Use a volt meter. Voltage should be 1-2v difference between the car off and on. If both reading are the same then your alternator needs to be replaced.
Or the gettho way
Start the car and disconnect the battery. Car should stay running, if it doesnt the alternator is bad.

You can do either, but any auto electrics place will keep the proper connector for the back of the alternator, which may be neater, but no more effective than running a wire from the batt to the B post terminal on the alternator as you suggest usually No fuses in this wire unless a really modern car.

OK get the battery recharged at autozone or something or buy a new one or borrow a friends more than likely if while you were driving it just died its the alternator being that if it still worked it would of been fine till you turned the car off then you would of been screwed being that the alternator would keep the car running without the battery in the car at all.
