head gasket blown can be found by taking a compression check, there will be no compression or very low compression if the head gasket is blown. also need to be sure there is no air leaking through a bad valve intake or exhaust. another way to know if a head gasket is blown or crack head or block is water in the oil, or lots of air coming out of the radiator or overheating. sometimes if the valve cover is removed and engine running ( not always reccomended ) you can see air bubbles on the head if cracked. I've seen all the above. if the engine is still together, need more input of what is happening to get a better idea of a failure.
