Default 91 Accord - No Acceleration

I'm looking for help diagnosing a first time occurence. Last night after getting off the freeway, I was pulling into my neighborhood and the car lost the ability to accelerate.

I was going down a hill and it seemed to change gears and accelerate. Yet, once I was on level ground the only power I had was idle. The RPMs go up as I depress the accelerator, but there is no power delivered.

I was able to put the car in reverse, and after a hesitation, the car moved in a fashion that seemed normal. Yet, I tried to pull forward again and still had no power.

Can someone please tell me what the problem is likely to be, and if possible, ways to remedy the situation?

Thanks for your help

check your transmission fluid, how many miles do you have on this car, has the fluid for your trans been changed since you've owned the car. sounds like the trans is slipping.

I just checked the transmission fluid level, and it was high of all things. I also just started it to see if the problem was persistent. I drove it just on my street and it changed gears into second like normal.

However, upon starting it there was an unusual sound. There was a slight whistling noise emitted. Once I put it in gear it quieted down a little bit, but was still present.

There are 189,000 miles on it. I haven't changed the transmission fluid lately. Would a drain and fill help?

yes a drain and fill may help, also check the bottom of the pan and the filter for metallic particles. And the drive around the block, did it shift out proper on all gears?
