First of all, nice forum you guys got here!
Now to the reason of this post; My 2000 Accord v6 Automatic stalls sometimes. It happens when I go to the grocery store, park the car and try to start it again within 10-20 minutes. The engine will start, and then stall. The rpm needle will not go hgher then 400-500 rpm. It seems like it is running on 5 cylinders. Also the check engine light comes on.
When you hold the gas and keep revving for a couple of minutes the problem goes away and it idles normally again. When you will try to drive away when it does this, it will stall. So holding the accelerator for a couple of minutes is the only way to let it run normal again.
It will only happen with a hot engine.
Sometimes the problem does not occur for a couple of months and then it comes back and happens everyday for a couple or days or so.
When it does this, the car does not smoke or smells of gasoline.
I went to the garage (not Honda dealer) and he red the fault codes with the computer. The mechanic said that the fault codes told him there was a misfire on all cilinders and he did not know what to do about it. He was not very clear in what he did check.
I am gonna bring the car to a garage again soon, but I want to know if there is something I can do first myself. Or does anybody had a similar problem and knows where to look. Or does somebody know in which direction to look? I am afraid the garage won't find the problem again and will just give me another bill.....

Sounds like your vehicle is suffering from a faulty egr valve (exhaust gas recirculation), this is most likely the cause of the multiple misfire code. It happens when the valves pintle gets stuck due to carbon build up, and may have egr valve insufficent lift code. There was a updated egr valve and passage kit for this vehicle available from Honda. It replaces the valve and the upper intake is removed and a passage is drilled out to a larger size and sleeved to prevent clogging with carbon (let a Honda dealer install this). They will also clean out the passage between the valve and the intake also. After this repair is done a new idle air control valve (maintains idle) may also need replacement due to carbon build up, but not always.

 

When you take it to the garage and they have access to a scan tool a good way to identify s faulty egr valve is the valve will read greater than 1.15 volts on the data list if the pintle is sticking with the engine warmed up.
