Default accord 92 idle issue

hi there

a friend of mine bought a 92 accord this winter and not a very long time ago it started to act weird when you start it

you start the engine, it will then rev up to 3000RPM -- 1000 RPM, waaappp waaapp (you know what i mean) by itself, for around 30-40 seconds then it comes to idle

when it idles, it idles very good
it wont do it again unless you turn off the car and start it again...

he was told it may be the idle valve but now we wondering why would a defect idle valve work bad for only 30-40 seconds, then work great as long as you dont turn off the car...

any advice on this would be greatly appreciated

thanks a lot
nate

welcome to the forum. defective may cause the valve to stick or be sluggish, electronic part if bad will not keep an idle steady.

hi thanks for reply

a bad valve or electronic would keep the idle not steady but for only 30-40 seconds every time the engine is started, only once, and then become normal after??

yes. here is another example. 90-93 accord, starts great, runs smooth, until some time later when I gas up, then no start. wait 15 mins, car starts smooth, drive a long time with not problems. next day warm, no start. wait 15 min, now start. ( main relay going bad. )
If in doubt, take to a shop and ask to do a dionostic check on a scope or machine. this will usually tell you what is going bad.

hrmm

we tighten the white donut in the thermo fast idle valve until it would not turn anymore
i noticed the kind of nipple in the middle which can be pushed downward was kind of being a little bit rough
would shooting carb cleaner through this help?

once the donut was tighten, the rpm stays steady at 2500 for few seconds, then drops down to 1000 and then revs up to 2500 again (the problem seems to be a bit fixed, as it would not stay steady at all before i tighten the donut, but now it will start to rev up and down again)

if the thermo fast idle valve aint the problem, any idea of what else it could be?
my friend told me that his temperature gage in the dashboard aint working at all
he also told me he changed the 3 temperature sensor under the hood (not sure if theres more...) but he told me he aint sure theyre good because they are expensive (he told me 100$ each) and he got them from scrapyard

any ideas? bad thermo sensors under the hood? why the dahsboard temp sensor wouldnt work?...

out of ideas and not really wanting to get mechanics fix this as its always better to do it yourself and learn

if any idea please share, would be appreciated

cheers
nate
