Conventional oil VS Synthetic
my 94 accord reached 220,000 miles and i took it in for a tune up, the sparks plugs and wires were replaced, ignition timing adjusted, 4 new tyres and timing belt service, runs awesome now. Anyway the guy told me my engine was running a little noisier than normal cos the oil i was using wasnt good enough, he said changing to synthetic would fix it , ive heard that sythetic oil can cause engine damage to older cars, is this true? ive never used synthetic oil before in this car..is it ok to switch or better to stick with with a good conventional oil..thanks

my 02 civic 198k has been on synthetic mobil 05-20w since 100k now problem. my 90 accord has been on synthetic since 100k mobil 05-20w a little cam noise but needs adjustment. no problems. You might read the article on car craft, and auto media.com they cover this and mention NASCAR.

I've been told that most do not recommend using synthetic in older vehicles because they are more worn and the conventional oil sticks better. I'm not sure how reliable that information is. I do know they make a full synthetic oil that is made for high mileage vehicles. I used it in my old civic with just over 100k and it ran like a champ...of course.

go to wikipedia.org and go to synthetic oil. Also for info, many jet engines are running on synthetic oil, on the ground and up to 40k feet, some higher, high temp, low temp. Our cars could not come close to the temp or altitude the jet engines go to.

yeah i suggest you stick with the conventional oil because old engines including its lakewood engine mount are not mostly used to synthetic oils..

i use 5w30 syn blend with stop and lucus oil addive on my 93 accord. with syn you don't have to change the oil until 5k instead of every 3k.
i do all the labor myself so i'm actually spending about the same amount with kn oil filter.
