Default Distributor problem - please help

The distributor on my 86 accord recently sheared in half (a problem I've been told is not all that uncommon), so, I grabbed a rebuilt one, and threw it in. The way it's designed, there is only one way to put it back in, or so it seems, but I can't get it to start back up. I checked the pluggs, and they are firing, so I dont know what to try next. (and yes, the pluggs are in the right order) Any ideas appreciated, thanks.

Aloha and Welcome to the forum. Distributor shaft 180 degrees out? If you take nbr 1 cyl to top dead center, and know the position of the rotor (w/cistributor cap off) you can line up the nbr 1 cyl with the rotor in the correct position.

there is only one way it can go in correctly, so it shouldn't be 180 off (we took it out, switched it, tried it, took it out and switched it back, just to be POSITIVE, and it is most definatley correct now) but i will try putting the the #1 at top dead center. Thanks.
