Default Need something explained

My 87 Accord has been sitting for a couple months (being ran as often as possible) in the cold Wisconsin winter. Last time I started it, I ran it for about half an hour to let it fully heat up and run at that temp for a while. My dilemma: First, what is the little black box on the firewall on the passenger side with all the wires running to it? Second, after the car ran at temp for a while, a whining noise started coming from that box. It only did it when the car was idling, if I hit the gas, it died away. So anybody know what's going on?

I was looking at a 87 accord service manual. looks like the box on the fire wall is called a control box. it has cold advance solenoid valve, air valve control solenoid valve, manifold absolute pressure sensor, and idle mixture adjuster sensor. so appears there are 4 vaccum lines. perhaps the whining noise is a leaking vaccum line. open the box a nd view inside if possible.
