Default Octane 87, 89 or 93?? SOS

No answers on this one the last time I posted...So Ill try again.

I have a 2005 EX V6

IF I use 87 or 89, knocks on acceleration, (sounds like dice in a can...sometimes a little popping to the noise..its a light noise but its there.....but overall idles and runs smooth.

If I use 93 octane, Accelerates great, no knocks, but idles rougher then I like and at a slightly lower rpm

Anyone else have this issue?

Dealer tells me while book says 87 or higher octane....compression ratio is 10:1 so i should just use 93 Octane...Im to cheap for that it cant be true? Can it? Is 10:1 that high?

Very Frustrating

I use Shell and Chevron

If you refer to honda.com , it will show you that the v6 accord ex has a 10.1 compression ratio. It is above the 9.7-1 for the 4 cyl. Does state regular gas. Depending on what mixture of gas you use in different states, the lower octane will cause a knock. Also if the timing is advanced more than usual, it will cause a ping (eng knock ) A friend of mine has a 00 accord v6 and they use 89 due to mild knock with 87. ( Shell ) Suggest to ask your mech to check the timing and if it can be set to use the lower octane.

Mine always knocked on 87 (I bought it at 600 miles) It is an engine ping or knock on acceleration. It lessens in frequency at 89, but the noise is still thereand at 93 octane the noise is gone. BUT at 93 octane the car idles differeently , and in general doesnt seem as smooth around town. Im in Florida. Ususally Hot.

And there is the price of premium too. I can probably live with the knocking if its not damaging the engine...you can hear it, but you cant feel it.

I use only Shell and Chevron.

I asked the techs about adjusting the timing, they said Id need to go after a new ecu and they talked me out of it.....is that true do you think? A whole computer to adjust timing? It doesnt seem possible. I think its what you say, I think the timing is too advanced.

BUt they say its the compression ratio.....and that Honda just didnt write different owners manuals for the V$ and the 4 cylander...

Driving me nuts.

Not positive on ecu, I'll talk to my Honda friends, and the certified mech across the street from me, he works on all the cars and has run into these a lot. Will email you direct.
