Default Problem with my cousins accord

He took off in it last night in 1st gear (its an auto) and when he started to put it in 2nd around 4500 rpms he said it made a backfiring sound and now we can't get it to start. its a 1996 honda accord lx 2.2 we took the wire that runs from the coil to the distributor off to see if it was firing and itll fire once and then it wont fire again until u turn the car off and back on but it fires no more than one time

if the starter turns, and have a good battery. You need a new distributor. That backfire you heard is most likely a mis-fire. Look into a little more. With a few more people, but I am PRETTY sure that should fix it.
