Default Windshield washer - Honda Accord '14

Hi all, hope you've had a great weekend!!

I have a few questions. No fluid comes out when I try to spray the windshield washer on my car. I do hear the sound of the motor running and the wipers then go on to rub a dry windshield.

I am hoping it's just empty and needs a refill and not some serious problem with the pump or anything. Being a first time car owner, I'd like to know after how many sprays does the fluid go empty? I have had the car since September 2013, and have driven it some 5500 miles in CA, USA, so have used it quite often. But I've had friends who've had their cars for longer, but never replaced the fluid themselves.

How do I check whether the fluid is empty/if there is no problem with the pump, and what kinda fluid should I buy to replace it?

Thanks!

Go to an auto parts store and buy windshield washer fluid, some contain detergents that clean dirt and bug proteins from glass. I'm certain some folks make their own solutions at home. In winter I use the washer fluid that doesn't freeze.
