Default Best Civic to buy?

I currently drive a 1986 Honda Civic but I'm looking to upgrade to a model from the mid 90s to mid 2000s. What is the best year and trim to buy? Reliability is the number one factor in my mind, I don't want to have to put a whole ton of money into the car once I have it. I read in a car buying book that the '98 Civic SI is an excellent choice. Is this true? Thanks.

Thanks for your response. I've heard that 98-02 Civics have big transmission problems. Any truth to this?
