Hello ...

I have a 2000 Honda Civic coupe -- automatic, non-power windows, non-power door locks. It has about 136,000 miles.

The body has some minor damage on the driver's side. The interior is not great cosmetically -- I mean, it's not a disaster, but it could definitely use a cleaning/detailing.

I have been very careful about maintenance. I had the car checked over today and the mechanic told me it was in very good condition and he couldn't find anything that needed repair.

My mother has a 1999 Honda Civic four-door sedan -- automatic, power windows, power door locks. Although it is a year older than my Civic, it only has about 85,000 miles -- a little over 50,000 fewer miles than my car.

Her interior is in much more pristine condition than mine.

I had my mechanic check her car over. It needs to have the brake fluid flushed and it needs a muffler, but otherwise, he said it, too, is in very good condition.

My mother is no longer driving. I need to decide if I should keep my Civic or take hers instead.

Since they are both in good shape under the hood, should a deciding factor be that hers has about 50,000 fewer miles? Is that considered a significant difference?

Whichever car I keep, I intend to be driving it for some time, as I have no plans at this point to be purchasing a new car.

welcome to the forum. Being both cars are in great shape, I would keep both, but if you can only keep 1, it will be the one that you want to drive, and feel good about it. both civics can go to 300k easy with proper maintenance. both cars are liked by many. 1 year of age is not much, 50k is not much. keep the one you feel is the better or you like more. (my own opinion)

It's a difficult choice. I can't keep both because I don't need two cars and there would be no point in paying to insure both, et cetera.

I am sentimentally attached to my Civic for a number of reasons. And I love driving it. I'm used to it. I like how it handles.

However, I could easily get sentimentally attached to my mother's, too. I think my mother would like me to take it, rather than our selling it. I would become accustomed to how it drives/handles once I start driving it regularly, I would think.

My car shows a lot more interior wear because it has had more intensive use. My mother's car interior is just about perfect. She has been meticulous about that. It has some minor body scrapes, but I am going to have those repaired regardless, so that would mean her car's body condition would also be excellent in terms of scrapes, dents, et cetera.

So it's a tough choice! I love my car. But since the other car is my mother's, I think I would get to love that one, too.

i would keep both since most if not all the parts are interchangeable between both cars use one as a parts car swap interiors. obviously drop insurance on parts car then sell it if you ever need some quick easy cash.

 

Thanks. I really can't keep both cars, though. For various reasons -- including where I would keep the other car physically -- it wouldn't work for me to have two cars.

 

well then swap in what good interior parts you can then sell the car.

 

According to the mechanic, there aren't really any parts that need to be swapped. Both cars have had their timing belts replaced. The mechanic said that he couldn't find any significant issues under the hood with either car. They have both been well maintained.

 

im talking about swapping the interiors because you mentioned one was better then the other.

 

Oh, I see. Thank you for the suggestion.

I don't think that would work for me, though. I think it would be expensive for me to have that done. Also, the interiors are not the same color, so moving some things from one car to the other would give a mis-matched effect. And it would, I think, get complicated and expensive to try to switch things like seats and carpets.

I think I just need to decide which of the two cars to keep as they are.

well yeah if you paid someone else to do it but its actually easy to do just time consuming.
