Question D15B7/Y8 Mini-Me

Sooo I believe the B7 head or head gasket went on my 95 Civic Ej2 because it starts and runs like absolute s**t I had a mechanic do a compression tast and whatever else he did and he said it had failed the test he said it was either the head or gasket so I figured I'll do it myself and save myself some money and while I'm at it why not do a conversion to a Vtec head and gain a little power at the same time. I'm a little lost on a couple things though, What timing belt do I need or can I just swap cam gears or what? I was reading and a guy said you could use an adjustable cam gear or use the B7 cam gear anyone who has knowledge about a mini-me build and anyone who has successfully done one please I could really use some help. I was reading a guy kept blowing head gasket after head gasket and he couldn't find out why. which distributor do you use? the Y8 or B7? do I need a diff timing belt than my stock belt versus getting a new cam gear?

Edit* Well so far things have been going smoothly with the swap but so far the only two major worries I have right now are getting a proper ECU and wiring up the Vtec.

Edit Edit*** oookay so the mini me is done yet it fails to start. it just turns over not even trying to catch or actually start up.yes there is spark and fuel the exhaust mani is off and very light smoke comes out each port. sooo idk like 800 into this build I'm thinking this build isn't worth it =/ could've got a new engine...

Edit Edit Edit***** =P baha ha okay so I re-timed it and now it's starting up I still need an adjustable cam gear to idle more smooth. it's not rough but seems kinda low maybe lacking power or something not sure. again any tips ideas or experiences with a D15b7/ Y8 conversion please feel free to let me know. and yes my ECU is chipped but I went with stock settings for now should I bump anything up? like maybe fuel intake or something? if so how would I go aabout bumping it up I know obviously computer software but I'm sure I need a special harnes to hook my laptop up to the ECU right?

that si distributor isnt going to work with obd1......use an obdII distributor and rework the plugs.

you are going ot need a chipped p28 to run that combo correctly. if you go this route, the only NEW wire you need to run is one for the vtec. you can retain your stock 1 wire 02 sesnsor and you can simply disable the VTP circuit.

if you use the z6 cam, use the y8 cam gear. if you use the y8 cam, use the a6 cam gear is what he said. doesnt matter if its adjustable or not.

and you use the z6 belt.

well I got it runnin and all but I guess the vtec isn't engaging so yet another bump in the road. guess I need to do a series of tests I was told a pretty easy test was to diy a vtec light just to see if it's even sending out anything to the solenoid if no then it's probably wiring or ecu, if yes then it's got to be an oil pressure thing or a bad pressure plate or solenoid. anything else? oh I don't have a tach and I was told a tach is needed for vtec to engage is this true?.

aaand now another problem has arisen I think I blew the head gasket =/ the coolant just flows right out of the overflow tank everywhere I look everyone says it's because of a blown HG so I'm tired of this piece of junk anyone wanna buy it? lol.

okay well on second thoughts the Mini me thing didn't work out so well. about $800 wasted but now I've gone the D16Z6 route.

In my opinion vtec is overrated. If you want a fun SOHC d16a6 with the 91 si tranny is the way to go. I only have about 400 or so into my motor and it money very well spent.

yeah kind of. I mean the D16Z6 I've got now pulls pretty good compared to the D15B7 I had. the Vtec needs to be adjusted for this engine because it's still set for the last engine and doesn't engage till I'm almost red lined. but this engine won't be around for very long because I'm going J series. lots of money yes, but in the end it'll be one of few that have it. and only the second EJ2 that I know of with it. it's always been in my nature to be different and this is about as different as it gets. I've accepted the fact that this car is gonna be a money pit and I'm okay with it because I for some reason just love this car. plus I'm only 20 so I've still got my whole life ahead of me =P I don't plan on doing anything much crazy with that J32A2 after either. intake, exhaust, maybe low PSI SC and that's about it. and it'll be much easier to give my uncles 2010 Jaguar XK-R Portfolio a good run for it's money if I do decide to get a little crazy ;]

this would be it right here http://images.jaxsportscars.com/pictures/36475783.jpg ;D
