Default D16y8 swap

I'm doing a head swap to the vtech and was wondering if I really need to change out the original ecu or should I get the ecu for the year of the head. My car is originally a 1992 Civic DX non-vetc. The head going on is a 97 Civic EX head. I have already purchased the ecu for the 97 but trying to avoid buying the whole wiring harness.
