RE: which intake is better?
It does just suck in more air. It sucks in cooler air as well. It doesn't use more gas because the same amount of fuel is going to be released from the fuel injectors no matter what you do to the intake. So you're using more fuel, but cooler air will produce a bigger bag since it's more compressed than warmer air. That slightly bigger bang will give you maybe a 6hp increase at the wheels.

RE: which intake is better?
I don't want to start an arguement here but an intake tube is an intake tube. Some might just fit better then others. So wether you buy an AEM or an Injen or just some thing you saw on ebay your getting colder air assuming that the filter is going to the outside of the car. that short ram is still in the engine compartment and is just sucking in more of that hot air under the hood. Unless you get some kind of box that will seal with the hood when it closes to prevent it from getting so much of that hot air. K&N makes an intake set up like that for a lot of cars (not sure if they do for the civic). You won't really notice the power increase and the only way you get better gas mileage is if you drive like you normally do not just hitting the gas so you can hear your intake.
