Default dog clutch replacement in the lower unit

I have a 50 HP outboard that won't go into reverse. My research leads me to the dog clutch. I have started disassembly, but I am hoping someone can confirm my next steps. I have removed the threaded retainer and washer behind it and next out is the carrier where the water seals are located. Do I use a puller to remove it? Should I be able to pull the propeller shaft out after that, leaving the forward gear and the pinion on the drive shaft in place? Any help is appreciated!
