Default Honda 9.9 Charging System

Hello,

I purchased a Honda 9.9 four stroke used last year. The charging system does not work.

I measured the AC voltage coming from the Charge Coil to be between 8 volts AC and 35 Volts AC, depending on engine speed.

I measure zero volts DC coming fromthe Regulator Rectifier. Becasue I measured zero volts from the Regulator, I figured this must be the problem. So I purchased a new one. I still have the same problem.

Am I doing something wrong?

Can anyone explain to me how the charging system should work? What voltage should I see from the charge coil? Is my new Regulator rectifer bad?

Thanks,

Steve

I received a reply back from Honda.

The coil should be outputing between 200 and 300 Vac.

So it looks like a bad coil.

The problem is Solved!!

The regulator has to be connected to a battery.

I was trying to take measurements from these various parts, when they were not connected.

The charging system only works when the out-put is connected to battery. There should be some reference to this in the manual.

Thanks,
