Default Best year for used Civic or Accord for my teens?

I'm looking at used Accords & Civics for my two teenagers. My budget is under $2500 so I know it will be an old car. What years/models are the most reliable? Are there specific years/models I should avoid? (Consumer Reports only goes back about 10 years in their info, so I need another source.) Any and all advice for this single mom would be helpful!
Thanks!

welcome to the forum. accords 99-2002, some had tranny problems. check with the insurance company also. some honda insurance are lower than other years. If the previous owners have all the maint receipts that is a great help.

accords (99-02) are usually trashed. the subframes and fuel lines and brake lines are rusted out on almost all of them (we see them all the time at the dealership). my opinion would be a 2001-2005 civic. pretty well bulletproof if ya put a timing belt on every 100k and keep an eye on the oil level. we see these daily with 300,000 with no issues! no big known issues at all!
