I have been looking for a car for a while. Here's what you should know: I am a working student, so I don't have tons of money for a car, I need something that I can drive close to 50 miles a day with. Thus, I have pretty much decided that Honda is the way to go.

I have found a 1988 CRX si, with 250,000 miles on the body and 2000 miles on a rebuilt moter. The price is right, but the car needs new cv joints at the very least. It might need new cv axles. The owner also says the it "burnes a little oil", but he is not sure why. So, my question is should I go for the car or will it simply become a money pit?

welcome to the forum, the crx is a good car, with a new rebult engine it should go for a long time. Need to find out what burning a little oil is, 1 qt per tank, 1 qt per 2000 miles, 1at per 5000 miles. the half shafts ( cv ) will cost about 100.00 per side est.
some places will replace it if you buy it. The rebuilt ones depending on where you purchase may fail sooner than normal. factor new or reman is usually better, with warranty. I don't know what the right price is unless you use the nada resale book, also with a new engine does not consitute adding more to the price of the car.
Basic price on a car with age is, if it runs good, its worth 500.00 if is current and in good shape the price goes up.

 

Thanks for the info. The guy is asking $2200 obo. So probably too much with the issues the car has. I think I will hold out for another car.

 

with that amount of money, you can purchase a good civic or accord up to 1994, try looking at craigslist, recycler, and if you know of any auto auctions that have the cars already smogged, this will be good . I'm glad you are still in school, you gonna need all the education you can get if you want to earn a decent living to pay back all this stimulus money borrowed by this congress.
