Help - issue importing Canadian CRV - gauge cluster?
Hello everyone, first post here.
My parents have offered to gift a 2010 Honda CRV EX-L to me but the car is a Canadian version and I live in the USA. According to my customs broker, in order to import the car, customs and the DOT require that it has an odometer that reads in miles not kilometers. Unfortunately this model ONLY displays km does not have a simple press a few buttons on the gauge cluster to change it to miles option like many other models do (I have had it to a dealer who confirmed this) The car would be a lifesaver for me as I am in the middle of a bankruptcy where I am losing my current vehicle due to too much equity in it and my parents have offered the CRV for free and it roughly fits with the $7500 vehicle value limit under bankruptcy law so I would be able to keep it and as long as I am able to solve this and its not really expensive to modify.
I have been trying to figure out exactly what would need to be done to convert it and if it would be cost effective to do.
So far my local Honda dealer, Honda USA, Honda Canada, and my parents local Honda dealer in Canada have been no help though I am still trying to get some information from them. However I am hoping some informed person here may have some answers since its like pulling teeth to get someone who really knows the cars at Honda to give me the answers since it is not a common problem.
I am able to buy a compatible used USA gauge cluster and have it flashed to match the VIN of the car and mileage (when converted from KM) easy enough, however I am not sure if that is all I would need to do? It could be as simple as doing this and plugging it in but I do not know enough about how the system works to say.
i.e. are there components upstream of the gauge cluster that would also need to be changed? I assume the odometer works by receiving some sort of signal from an ECU or other part of the car but wonder if a Canadian Car would have a different part upstream of the gauge cluster the feeds a different voltage or signal vs an American car. Alternately maybe the upstream ECU or other "signal generating components" may be the same on both the Canadian and US cars and its the gauge cluster itself that actually displays KM if it were the Canadian version or Miles if it were the USA due to some component on it being different. I don't know enough about how these systems work on cars to say but I imagine a few of you are mechanics or are knowledgeable and may have some insight
Perhaps someone could point me to what components and part numbers feed the odometer/gauge cluster and I can see if the Canadian and USA parts are the same? If so that might indicate all I need to do is swap the reprogrammed USA gauge cluster and I'm in business, or point me to whatever else would have to be changed as well.
thanks for any input
