Default High RPM on Start - 2009 Honda CR-V

2009 Honda CR-V, 2.4L FI DOHC 4cyl

Hi all,

I’m experiencing a high RPM issue with my 2009 Honda CR-V, and I’m hoping someone here might have some advice.

Issue:
When I start the car, the RPMs shoot up to around 1400 and then slowly decrease to the normal range of 650-700 RPM over the span of about 5 minutes. Once the car is warmed up, everything seems fine, and I don't experience any further RPM issues while driving.

What I’ve done so far:
  • Transmission Solenoids Replacement: About 9 months ago, I replaced the 2nd and 3rd gear solenoids on the transmission to fix a blinking "D" issue. To do this, I had to remove the airbox, which I’ve reinstalled carefully multiple times. The high RPM issue might have started around this time, but I’m not sure.
  • Starter Replacement and Throttle Body Cleaning: More recently, I replaced the starter, which required me to remove the airbox, air intake, and throttle body. While the throttle body was out, I cleaned it without moving the flap and performed a TPS relearn procedure using a scan tool. The procedure takes about 20-30 minutes to complete. After the relearn proceedure, it stays normal for about 2-3 starts, but then goes back to 1400 RPM after that. However, the RPM remains steady once the engine is warm.
  • Gasket Replacements: I’ve also replaced both the throttle body gasket and the intake manifold gasket during this process to rule out any leaks from worn gaskets.
Additional Info:
  • The car sometimes idles rough when cold, but it stabilizes after warming up.
  • I’ve double-checked the connections on the airbox, throttle body, and intake manifold.
Edit: Other things I've done that might not be needed here but wanted to mention. I'm unsure of the timeframe these were done and when the issue started. But, these were all done in the past year;
  • Replaced Transmission Inline Filter
  • Replaced Transmission fluid
  • Replaced Oil and Oil Filter
  • Replaced Engine Air Filter
  • Replaced Serpentine Belt and Tensioner
  • Replaced Spark Plugs and Coils

What you are experiencing is the normal cold start program of the PCM.
