Default Intermediate shaft problems

I can’t get my driver side intermediate cv shaft back into the transmission all the way. Sticks out about 1/2 in does anyone know any tricks or have suggestions on what to try? I have tried hitting the end with a hammer and no luck this is on a 98 Honda CR-V AWD

If it is the retaining ring which is holding it from going back in
Then try a little grease to keep the ring in the correct position and re-insert
