welcome to the forum. during the compression check where was the air leaking out of, if intake, top overhaul, if exhaust top overhaul if crankcase piston rings worn. if top overhaual find out if you can find a good used low milage engine for about 500-700.00 with removal and install for 500-800.00. just a note, when the head is overhauled, it does put more pressure on the pistons due to head being tight w/no leaks.

my mech did not say where it was blowing by. i am wondering about cost for a top end rebuild, and if the rings are bad. dont if that can be done with out pulling engine etc. and cost going to high.

First got to figure out where the leak is.
Is it in the head gasket? I
Is it the valves?
Is it the rings or piston?
Each one has a different cost associated with it.
Have you done a leak down test?
Take out spark plugs and hook up a hose to a cylinder
Turn engine over to close the vales on the cylinder
Then pressurize and check to see how fast it is leaking
That should tell you whether it is a valve or ring and piston?
Then call and ask for options along with cost for each option
Good luck

If the rings need replacing then the mechanic will usually ask if you want to get a used engine put in
But, cost all depends on where you take it.
