I have a 2012 CR V EX-L with nav. It doesn't have Apple CarPlay. I'm going to be passing this car down to my daughter when she gets her license in a few months and I'd like to have a system with CarPlay for her so she can use updated maps and easily play music through Spotify without trying to navigate the built-in system. Is there a way to just update the software to get this? I'm not huge on the idea of installing an aftermarket system - I am thinking it will be complicated to integrate the existing controls, backup camera and bluetooth speaker/microphone. Should I think differently?

There's really no way to update the existing system to get what you want. An after market system would be, as you say, difficult to get all the existing stuff to work, not to mention pretty expensive.

I've been considering the same thing for my 2014. But I think the best option is a simple 'phone holder' and have it connect with bluetooth to get map directions (and music) from the phone over the car speakers. While I'd love to have a nice big capacitive touch screen and android auto, etc... Researching it really makes it clear how intimately integrated these oem headunits are. And so many of the connections, back up camera, microphone, antenna, usb ports, etc are proprietary connections.

I went with a Kenwood stereo thru Crutchfield. You get all the wiring face plate etc to install it. It is very simple to do and comes with instructions. I had 259 in everything and its better than a Bose.
