Default VSA light, loss of power

Yesterday we were driving our 2008 CR-V and the VSA idiot light came on. At the same time, the engine sort of "Hiccupped" like it momentarily quit, then started again.

We pulled over, shut the engine off, waited a couple of minutes, then re-started. No VSA light. We continued on our merry way, and came to a long steep hill and started up it. The VSA light comes on again, the engine hiccups, but now it seems to have much less power and slows way down climbing the hill.

We got to the top of the hill, where the terrain levels off, and although the VSA light stayed on, the car seemed to drive normally with decent acceleration and power.

I guess I should admit that the vehicle's check engine light has been on for a couple of weeks, and I have been procrastinating about dealing with it.

We got to our destination (our son's house) OK, but asked our other son for a ride home at the end of the evening.

I guess I am going to call our local mechanic, but if anyone here has suggestions about the problem and solution, I would be grateful.

Codes? Scan all modules and report back with the code numbers.
Were there slick spots on the road?
