When Key Is Stuck In Ignition - Which Part To Replace?
Hi!
Constant lurker thats owned my 98 Honda CRV Automatic for the last 10 years. Its at 225K now and the key is stuck in the ignition on Accessory. I can turn it on and back to accessory but never back to "0" to remove. I have done all the normal things such as:
1. Spray Locksmith Lubricant
2. Wiggle the key and play with park
3. Use the Shift Lock
4. Slam it into Park.
But those are all mechanical solutions to what is an electronic problem. I can disconnect the battery and the key will easily turn to "0" and I can remove it. I have been doing this for a few weeks while I think of what to do next. My question:
1. Is the ignition switch responsible for the interlock? Can I replace only the ignition switch ($60)
2. Should I instead just get the full ignition switch and cylinder lock with key? ($100-$150)
From the all tutorials I saw, i will need a dremel tool to cut off the bolt that keeps the ignition secure.
Any insight is greatly appreciated!

The ignition key is held in by the gear selector shift lock.
Taking the battery out will release the mechanism.
Would start troubleshooting by looking into the gear selector
Sometimes the button one pushes in to release the gear selector after stepping on the brake pedal
Well, a little piece breaks and the button doesn't come out all the way.
Put the gear selector in drive and look at the front part
There should be a screw or two holding the top on
That will let you get the top off and inspect it.
Good luck
