Default 3.5l Vtec Oil control valve assembly

Hi. I have an 06 Ridgeline with the 3.5l. I am trying to cure some oil leaks. I removed my valve assembly with the oil filter hanging off of it. I turned it over in my hand to unplug the pressure switch and heard something with some weight to it land in my oil drain tub directly below. I searched in the pan (which had about 5 oz of oil in it) and pulled out a small ram/dumbbell looking piece. That's all there was. In the schematic I found online, it looks like a spring goes in before that piston does. I don't seem to have one and because I wasn't looking when things fell out I don't know if the truck did have one. I have searched for the spring 3 times to no avail. Please help. Is there supposed to be a spring?
