Question Catalytic converter issue

I had to have the catalytic converter replaced on my '98 Accord (LX 2.4L, auto) after check engine light came on. I bought the car used with about 115k miles on it and the light came on about 5k after that. Changing the Cat kept the code clear.

My question is what could have lead to the catalytic converter failure? I drive primarily on highways and have been getting about 26-29mpg. So I don't think I have excess fuel being sent thru exhaust system.

oil burning also can cause the cat to fail, too many short runs less than 5 miles normally will not allow the cat to obtain full heat operation.

Usually when a car starts to get that many miles on it the cat starts to loose its efficiency.

Default Changing the cat

Is the converter something that can be changed in my garage ?? or send it in to the shop.

Also - are there other items than can be replaced instead of or at the same time as the cat (e.g. PCV valve, gas cap, etc.)

yes all the items can be changed in your garage if they are all bolted. If the car has been sent to midas or sears, they will weld everything so you cannot take it apart in the garage. Also get yourself a service manual to work on your car. on most hondas, all exhaust systems are bolted togeather.
