'99 accord tranny leak
I purchased my accord used at around 95k miles. It's a 4 cylinder automatic that runs fine besides a few things. So far the only 2 problems I'm having are coming from my transmission. It is leaking enough to where I'm having to top off my fluid every 1-2 weeks and there is a bit of a jerk during gear changes while the engine is cold. After 5-10 minutes of driving the shifting is normal and there are no other problems. I've researched the problems that people have had with the honda transmissions and how most reccomend that I have the tranny rebuilt or replaced. However, my tranny isn't just falling apart on me like most of the cases I've seen. My question is should I have the tranny rebuilt for the leak or is there something else I can do since the tranny is otherwise fine.
What I've tried: I've ran lucas transmission fix through the fluid around 3 times and replaced the fluid at least twice. I also replaced the drive axle on the front passenger side where the leak was coming from. Nothing worked. When I bought it and noticed the leak the dealer told me they had fixed it and it wasn't leaking for about 3 weeks. The leaking started again and I was back to the same problem.

welcome to the forum. Have you given the dealer a chance to repair the car since you purchased this from them they said it was fixed? Or was the honda purchased as is where is? Running the Lucas fix was not a good thing to run in the Honda trans. Have you had a transmission shop look at it for advise and estimate? We have a trans person on this forum, will find and ask him to assist.

I've had it estimated and most are telling me that it will cost around 1-1.5k. I purchased the car as is but I noticed the leak on the test drive. The first time we took it back to the dealer it was solely for the leak. They replaced the fluid and the seal on the drive axle and it didn't leak again for about 2 days. When we took it back to them the next time it was for the jerking that the tranny did while it was warming up and the leak. They "fixed" the leak this time around for about 2-3 weeks. I replaced the drive axle and the seal shorty after this and noticed some high temperature sealant around the drive axle. I'm not entirely sure on what he said about the jerking, but it is aminor problem at the moment and not worth the 1,000 he thoughtI would put out for it.
I'm not against having to rebuild the tranny, but I want to make sure this has to be done. I've herd about the problems with these transmissions/recalls so I just want to make sure that nothing else can be done to fix the leak.

i work at a tranny shop. im not saying i know it all, but if i was you i would take some brake cleaner and spray the tranny off. pinpoint the leak. then take it to a tranny shop to be repaired. sounds like it is just a seal. if you find the right place, they will fix the problem instead of trying to make you rebuild. if you do have to rebuild then definately rebuild instead of buying a used one.
