I have a 1988 Accord with upper ball joints on the steering knuckle that are shot, how do I replace them? Do you just replace the joint or is it part of the upper arm?

I have looked in a varity of places and some show the upper arm and ball joint as one unit and others show that the ball joint is on a seperate plate that bolts to the upper arm. Which is it, can anyone conferm one or the other?
