Default Houston, we have a problem.

We're replacing the head gasket in my 91 Civic. We went to take the crankshaft pulley off to replace the timing belt and the belt broke. Now we don't know how to hold the crank from turning to replace the pulley. Any ideas? We don't have an impact or any fancy tools. Thanks.

go to the auto parts house and they carry a fly wheel lock tool. this prevents the fly wheel connected to the crankshaft between the engine rear and front of the transmission from turning. you might want to get a service manual to assist you to do this correct. make sure the cam shaft is off, if you turn the crank with the camshaft still bolted down, the pistons will hit the valves. this engine is a 0 tolerance engine.

It would be a good story if there was a solution to the problem
The "scratch that. we got it" doesn't quite cover it.
Please ... a little more detail

Haha, my husband basically got pissed off and tried again after a short break and it came free using the breaker bar. It took us awhile to get the pulley off as well because we didn't have enough room to use the gear puller. We ended up taking the motor mount off and the motor came down enough to allow us the room to get the puller on there. Our next battle is getting the manifold off so we can pull the head off. A few of the bolts won't come loose so we picked up a 6 point socket to see if it fits better. Been quite the process so far.
