Default Thumping & Grinding in Front Brakes

I've had the front rotors and pads replaced 3 times in the last year on my 2002 Civic. They are good for a few months then develop a grinding, thumping noise with vibes in the pedal. The last time I had it in for the service, the garage said they looked and there was nothing obviously wrong with them, but because they were under warranty, they were obligated to replace them. The front end has never been right since I hit a tree trunk that was laying across the road when I rounded a curve going 40 MPH. The collision bent the passenger side front wheel rim. Could that incident have anything to do with the brake noise?

depending on how hard the front end was hit, it may affect the alignment of the car and anything in front that got hit. replacing the front rotors and brakes 3 times in one year seems excessive unless you drive 100k+ miles a year. rotors and pads on an 02 civic should last 40-60k miles. also depends on what type of rotor and pads used. also brake dust will squeel. wash out with water cold brake once a week or so. NOT HOT ROTORS.

Probably I don't drive over 3000 miles a year, but when I do, it's a lot of stop-and-go.

your brakes should last many years if only 3k miles a year. if stop and go the rotor will warp only if you drive like the nascar drivers at martinsville. your front brakes sound odd that it would thump and grind in a short time. there may be other damage missed. did you replace the wheel, and get a wheel alignment.

No other equipment was replaced other than brake rotors and pads. I think if there was something else wrong, the mechanic would have told me. I am an old lady and not likely to drive like Dale Earnhart, Jr.

It appears the accident was more than a simple front end collision
The frame could be bent
The rim that was bent should have been thrown away
Those things can never be straighten out. Only replaced.
Suspension and steering must be checked.

Sorry, best solution, if you don't know precisely how to fix it, would be to get rid of car and get another one.

if you have not taken your car for a wheel alignment, you might find a good place and have them check into the noise you have on your front end. Dale jr is fun to watch when he has his program on tv. Enjoyed watching him when he raced.
