have a malfuntioning tach on one of my two engines, does anyone know where the wiring from the engine starts... the connections to the tach look solid

The tach will stop working when the charging coil fails. You should check that first because the dead charging coils will eventually result in a dead battery. There may in fact be nothing wrong with the tach. Good luck.
