Default '02 Metropolitan questions: fuel lines and air box

I'm working on an '02 CHF50 that sat for years with gas in the tank/lines. I bought 3/16 automotive fuel hose from an auto parts to replace the lines. I found the hose goes onto the carb fittings easily enough, but I struggle very much getting the plastic fuel filters into the hose, so much that I fear breaking them. Is it overkill to use automotive lines, or can I use a softer hose that will accept the fuel filter fittings better?

Also: I'm getting rid of the air box. The housing is broken and I think perfomance will be generally better with a cone air filter. I've read about changing the carb jets after deleting the air box, but is that 100% necessary, or just a performance suggestion?

Apologies if these are dopey questions: This is my first Honda, I've only worked on Chinese scooters until now. Thanks.
