Default 1986 Honda elite 250 not starting

Greetings all, was hoping for some guidance on a problem with a 1986 elite 250 not starting. The scooter is in great shape but rarely got used, probably less than 50mi/year
and unfortunately this year after a brutal winter it seems to have gotten very cranky. Last year I replaced the petcock as it would not seal and it ran very well but was difficult to start when not used for a week or two. This year I cannot seem to get it started at all and it will kick immediately when given a shot of starting fluid and the plug had no evidence of fuel. I was thinking of going to a manual petcock but was hoping for some advice first before retrofitting it. I looked locally for mechanics willing to work on it but have had no return calls. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

i just sold my elite 250. it had gotten really cranky starting. i replaced the autobystarter (choke) and it seemed better but not very much. i had to flick the kill switch on and off while pushing the starter button and it would start. if yours starts while flicking the switch, you have to undo and redo all the connectors right in front of the motor when you take off the cover under the front part of the seat. there is also a ground right in there also that has to be cleaned and re tightened.

Thanks for the reply, I will give it a shot since that area will be getting some attention. I was hoping to get it reliable since it was my fathers and my grandson wants to take it to high school as he is starting to drive now. Was also wondering if there was a trusted resource for parts. Have a feeling the items from Amazon are a gamble. Thanks again
