Default BF50 starter stays engaged

Hey Folks New here. I just tried to help my father get his boat in the water and when we tried to start the engine the starter stayed engaged. Even with the key out the only way to get it to stop is to pull the cables off the battery. Any one else come across this we got the starter off and solenoid off to get tested. THX

Shorted solenoid will do that. Glad you got it figured out. May want to look at the teeth on the ring gear of the flex plate.
