Splash Shield Manufacturing Problem 2024 CRV Sport
Just drove 415 miles in one of my CRV Sport Touring cars (this one 2024, only 12k miles). 3 hours into a 7 hour trip, the front clips(?)/screws(?) securing the splash shield under the engine dislodged, causing the part to fall down, scraping the road surface like a plow. Had to get towed to a Honda dealer who said he sees the problem “All the time,” adding that clips securing it pop out). He removed it (too damaged to use again), but didn’t have part (he said safe to drive without it). Dealer at destination installed new one, saying it must have been last person to change oil not securing properly with screws (not clips?). I was shocked that HONDA autos have this dangerous fault, which is mentioned often in other forums. Tempted to report to the National Highway and Safety Administrator for possible recall. My 7-hr trip took 11 hours.
Hi There,
The part that was folded, spindled and mutilated is called the lower engine cover or commonly referred to as a splash shield because that is what its function is along with minor aerodynamics.
It is held on by two types of fasteners.
1/4 turn slotted head (90674-TY2-A01)
which are pot metal and three truss head screws (90105-TBA-A00).
The problem is not Honda, it is the knuckleheads using the wrong tools and wrong technique to remove/install them. I see large blade screwdrivers and power drill drivers used by shade tree mechanics and dealer “technicians” all the time. They break the ears off the 1/4 turns and strip the phillips heads especially because they are using a P2 bit where a P3 bit is required.
All the parts (shield included) are available on Amazon.
My V came with two oil changes. My dealership was unable to correctly perform either service. I replaced the damaged fasteners, siphoned the overfilled oil out (1/2 & 3/4 QT) and the stealership has not seen the V since 2023.
