Default Intermittent Juddering on Acceleration

I have a 1999 Honda CRV, 2.0 petrol with a manual gearbox.

Sometimes when I start the car the engine management light is on and the Rev counter doesn't work. When I accelerate the car judders until I change gear.

Also, sometimes I start the car and there is no engine management light and the Rev counter is working, the car runs fine.

I've changed the spark plugs, leads and air filter and it hasn't made any difference.

The only other thing I noticed today is that the car was running fine, I stepped out for 2 minutes and left it running...it then just turned off on its own. When I restarted it the engine management light was back on.

Any ideas what could be wrong?
