Default question about driving uphill

I have a 2010 honda civic (automatic transmission). I'm just trying to figure out what is best for the engine when driving uphill (about a 10 to 15 second drive uphill). Currently, I accelerate slowly and i'm kinda afraid to step on the gas too hard. So I end up staying between 35-40 mph (with tachometer at 2 1/2). I feel that at that current gear, the engine is working too hard. Is this current way better for the engine or should i step on the gas (with tachometer probably going over 3 to 3 1/2) so it goes over 40 and to the next gear?
