I have an '02 Civic EX coupe with an automatic transmission and 189k. Yesterday while traveling on the interstate the transmission disengaged, and after that wouldn't reengage for more than fifteen or twenty seconds at a time.

I had it towed to the dealer where it has had all maintenance done, and they experienced the same problem.

They've told me that the transmission needs replaced, and quoted me $4200 to replace it with a remanufactured transmission with a 3 year warranty.

I'm sure it's safe to assume that I can have the repair done elsewhere cheaper, but I'm wondering if the transmission is really in need of replacement, or if some other component could be the cause.

I suppose it's also important to ask if it's worth repairing? Prior to this I've had no other issues with the car and it runs well and gets great mileage.

 

Welcome in,it is easier and takes less time for a dealer to replace one than rebuild,besides they make more money.I would take it to a reputable transmission shop and get there quote.
