Default Watch out for those large city trash barrels in road

Well, I have had a 2017 Civic Touring that I love a lot. I got really used to the Honda Sensing features, so that I enjoy driving the Civic a ton more than our older "dumb" minivan.

But then .... I was driving along a suburban roadway, on a trash day I guess, and I managed to clip the lid of one of the huge, sturdy trash containers our counties now use with the passenger side mirror. Ouch! Surprisingly the camera continued to function on my way back home, although it was dangling off the side of the door and didn't offer any very useful view.

Took it to my local garage who replaced the mirror with a Honda color-matched replacement, but they said they couldn't get it to re-calibrate so I had several idiot lights flashing on the dash (LKAS, etc). I thought that taking it to a dealership should fix it, so I just got back from a visit there, where I guess THEY tried recalibrating it, but all that did was leave me a couple hundred dollars poorer. They essentially said they'd have to undo what my local garage did, run diagnostics to see what else is wrong, meaning I would be paying double for the work with no real guarantee anything will be any better.

This was not a high-speed impact, there were no other people or vehicles involved, no air bag deployment, etc., etc., etc.

I love smart cars but I'm wondering if the safety features I came to love, are now worthless, and one trash barrel just ruined my ride.

Btw, on further examination of their paperwork I notice they *reported* that the indicator lights that were on remain on - also reported that I had had mirror replacement done at an "outside facility." And I got a checklist with the heading "COMPLIMENTARY MULTI-POINT INSPECTION" for my time and trouble. Very shoddy treatment from this dealership, which I had once been considering even purchasing my next vehicle from.

No, although, I didn't make a point about it either.
