Default Thinking of buying a used honda

My 16 year old son is wanting a honda civic and suggestions on how to make sure I don't get one that someone has worn out? I looked at a 2000 civic and almost got it until I noticed oil on the pavement where it was parked

I own a 02 civic with 275k and still running strong. 2dr 5sp. Gave it to my daughter and now being mod. timing belt each 112k, incl water pump and all seals with belt. trans overhaul now with clutch. not much else done. gas and oil changes and tires. do a car fax, ask if they have records of all maintenance and parts. i have 3 folders full. forgot changed all engine mounts and bushings on steering parts. 40mpg following sp limits. fwy driving.

buying a used car is always a toss up you can always have it checked by a mechanic. definitely don't buy anything that has been substantially modified.

That oil leak my have been coming from the oil pan plug,if you have your oil changed at one of those quick lube places they sometimes cross thread or donot tighten them correctly,or in my case every time my wife gets her the oil changed in her Honda they spill oil on the frame some place and it leaks down for days.I have owned Hondas for many years and they are built to last.
