Default VTX 1800R fork issue

I embarked on replacing my seals/dust covers/bushings on my inverted forks. Unfortunately, I unnecessarily removed the hex head bolt that holds the damper rod in the bottom of my right (sitting on my bike) fork. Now I can't get the damper rod seated on the centering plate. I've suspended it inverted, I've gotten two longer bolts (one 4mm & one 9mm longer than the original 16mm bolt) and, although I can get the longest one to thread, it's still not enough to seat it properly. I believe it has come loose on my last ride but I haven't taken it apart yet. Please advise!
