the dimmer, the little button on the dash that pops out and dims the cluster lights?

or are you referring to the headlight control arm - https://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/19...er_switch.html

can I ask why you believe this is the cause of the problem.

much thanks!

The rheostat that controls the light intensity is on the backside of the button that pops out. Spray it with contact cleaner.
They get dirty and will do this.

ok, so remove the unit from the dash. I assume it pops right out.

I have found that Deoxit5 works better than contact cleaner because contact cleaner while it cleans well it doesn’t lubricate the reostat or poteniometer for longer life.
You could initially use contact cleaner then spray later with Deoxit5. After you spray it, worked it back and forth to wipe the contacts.
