2000 Civic 1.6L Engine issue
2000 civic 1.6L 137,500 miles, second owner since 2009, Friends car, age 83, only driver.
tells me smells oil when parking in garage. I change valve cover gasket. Now tells new problem. Loss of power, car shakes, loud thumping noise but not muffler noise, then strong oil smell when shut off. . I drive cannot duplicate. 4 days later, tells me same problem again. Wants Honda to look at it. Said too scared to drive, wants me to drive until Honda looks at it.
Last Wednesday, drive to my home. All good 10 miles. Then went down a 10% slope. then uphill to 10% slope, the car slowed down. Pushed gas to increase speed. Transmission downshifted/speed increased. Top of hill, car levels out and runs okay about 20-30 seconds. THEN, car starts shaking, as if both tires were blown out.
THEN starts losing speed when I push accelerator pedal. Continued attempt to increase speed started a loud banging noise. I describe as slapping my hand hard and fast on the dashboard. Would only make the loud banging noise when I tried to accelerate. Pulled into service station, let sit, started car and no problems driving home. When parking in garage, smelled strong oil odor.
Next day, did it again but this time, pulled out of Dollar General to an uphill slope. Car slowed, increased gas, ,tranny downshifted, increased speed to top of grade , level road. Exact sequence as happened day before. Top of hill, car levels out and runs okay about 20-30 seconds. THEN, car starts shaking, as if both tires were blown out. Loud banging noise.
Three days since, drove perfect.
Today, problem returns. But not as extreme. coming from on ramp, join traffic on slight downhill slope. driving to uphill 3-4% slope. Traffic back up, reduced speed. Car started to shake, momentarily, but returned to normal to top of traffic signal about 1/2 mile away.
There is NO CEL of any warning light. Thought about scan tool test but no CEL, doubt any codes come up.
Apologize for the length but feel the more information provide, the better understanding to identifying the problem to repair the issue.
Thank you in advance for all your helping me fix this this problem
